Leaders. Innovators. Mentors.
In 1958, Drs. H. Whitney Boggs and Gene W. Slagle established Colon and Rectal Associates with the mission of providing excellence in the treatment of colon and rectal diseases.
Colon and Rectal Associates performed our 1st colonoscopy in 1974, which was the first colonoscopy performed in North Louisiana. We now complete approximately 2,000 endoscopic procedures per year. Advanced endoscopic technologies are critical in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the colon and rectum.
Our faculty performed the first minimally invasive colon resection in North Louisiana in 1992. We continue to provide minimally invasive options to our patients which result in faster recovery and reduced hospital stays. Three of our former fellows are recognized by Intuitive as leaders in robotic colon and rectal surgery utilizing the da Vinci system.
Our highly trained surgeons offer the most specialized, advanced procedures — like the minimally invasive TEM system — that allow our patients with benign and early malignant rectal lesions an option to avoid more morbid, traditional surgical procedures.
Since 1994, we’ve pioneered ERAS programs — which, paired with minimally invasive surgery, have become the standard of care in the field of colon and rectal surgery. ERAS programs help ensure the best outcomes for our patients, including shortened hospital stays, fewer complications and higher patient satisfaction.
The LSUHS Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program is the first and only surgical fellowship in North Louisiana —and one of only 68 training programs offered in the United States and Canada dedicated to colon and rectal surgery.

COLORECTAL TRAINING PROGRAM
The LSUHS Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship Program is the first and only surgical fellowship in North Louisiana — and one of only 68 training programs offered in the United States and Canada dedicated to colon and rectal surgery.
All of our surgeons are board certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery; they have earned special expertise in the diagnosis and management of issues involving the small intestine, colon, rectum, and anus.
We are engaged in national and international education forums, weekly conferences and critical appraisal of new treatments so that our community can benefit from the very best care available. Our colon and rectal research — and training program that attracts fellowship candidates nationwide — are conducted in conjunction with LSU Health Shreveport (LSUHS). Colon and Rectal Associates, in association with LSUHS, maintains one of only 68 residencies and the only fellowship program in North Louisiana for Colon and Rectal surgery in the United States. Surgeons trained by Colon and Rectal Associates are accomplished surgeons in both academic and private practice across the country.
